Chapter five

I awoke the next morning to the sounds of muffled voices coming from the kitchen. My head felt like an elephant sat on it for half the night; I guess anything was possible now that an entire clan of people from another world was out to kill me. I looked to the clock it was two a.m. what would my foster parents be doing up at this hour? Curious I slipped on my blue slippers and snuck out to the hallway.
"We can't keep doing this Mike. She's going to figure out eventually that we aren't her parents." My mother's voice echoed through the empty hall until it hit my ears. Cautiously I backed up against the hallway wall and awaited my father's reply as tears formed in my eyes.
"I know Maria, but we have acted as such for fifthteen years now. We can't just go out and tell her that there was a knock on the door, and then Caleb answered it thinking it was his friend and he found you." He reminded her as I slowly walked into the kitchen.
"I already know about that…" My parents lifted up their heads to find me standing under the arch of the kitchen.
"I had a dream about it the night before my birthday, that day it became clear that we only had one similarity… Our brown hair, then everything else started to add up…" I explained as my eyes became filled with tears. They weren't my parents, I knew that, but my heart was wishing that they were. Against my own will, I completely broke down as my foster parents embraced me into a tight hug while mother attempted to comfort me by stroking my hair.
"Why didn't you tell me this mom? So I didn't have to find out from a dream?" I begged for an answer barely able to speak over my tears.
"We just didn't know how." My mother tried to explain as my crying subsided.
We stayed like that for what seemed like hours.

The next day I did one thing that I promised I'd never do, skip school. I couldn't face my history teacher, not yet at least. He was my father I was positive of that, but after yesterdays event I didn't want any more excitement until I could sort out what I had in my head. For the first time in my life, I actually envied those popular know-it-all, shallow, brainless, no hearted girls who at least only had to deal with normal teenage problems. Why couldn't I have been a normal teen who just happened to be adopted? I thought as I walked through the park and noticed about five mothers and their kids, hanging around the play equipment area.
Deciding I could avoid their lectures, I turned around swiftly, and began to follow the rocky path down to the pond. If anything it was a nice day out, everything was making its preparations for the upcoming spring. Flowers were beginning to blossom, trees were growing leaves again, and birds were preparing for their upcoming offspring, the park was peaceful. Before long, I arrived at the lake, and took a spot right under the drooping tree then pulled out my pencils and sketchbook.
"So sleeping beauty how was your nap?" I heard a voice ask, making my pencils scatter all over the place. Looking around I found Takeshi hanging upside down on one of the tree branches grinning evilly, seconds later, he jumped down and began to help me gather my pencils.
"It wasn't a nap, I just passed out suddenly." I tried to explain to him as he picked up my sketchbook and began to look through it.
"Well what more do you expect when you first become a dragon tamer?" He asked as though I was stupid, as I gathered the last of my pencils.
"A what?" I asked shutting the case of my pencils.
"A dragon tamer, don't you know how the process goes?" He asked not removing his eyes from the Snake dragon I drew on my birthday. I shook my head, and he glanced up at me for only a second before returning his focus to the book.
"For someone who knows that she comes from an entirely different world, you don't know much about it." Takeshi teased before he closed the book and smiled. "If you find the dragon that matches your necklace, and you gain its trust, that dragon will become a spirit and lock itself inside of you, so whenever you call for them, you have complete control of them." Takeshi explained keeping his eyes to the ground.
"They seemed to give up a lot for me, while Misaki and I were-." I remembered suddenly and began to panic. "What happened to Misaki!" I asked as my voice began breaking.
"Relax, she was knocked out from trying to revive you using a psychic thing or whatever, so my partner took her home." Takeshi smirked as though it were no big deal.
"You sound like it's no big deal that she passed out trying to wake me up." I accused before another thought came to mind. "Hey how did he know where she lived anyway?"
"Let's just say that my partner has a thing for red heads with green eyes." Takeshi explained as he rubbed the back of his head as though he was afraid of answering the question.
"Isn't she a little young for him?" I asked disbelieving his words that this mystery boy who was thirteen, maybe twelve, was falling for a ten-year-old girl.
"Actually Misaki is thirteen, as well as my partner." Takeshi said in an intelligent tone that caught me off guard.
"She struck me as ten…" I thought aloud, sighing at my own stupidity of not asking her age.
"Ah don't feel too bad, I was trained to determine things such as age when I was five, so I have had practice since then." Takeshi explained to me giving me a smile of reassurance as his eyes met mine in a straight stare.
"Yukiko!" I heard Nova's voice call out making me turn my head to find Nova running up to me. "Hey why are you spending the first day of spring vacation standing alone in front of the lake?" She asked once she finally caught up to me. Turning around to point out I wasn't alone, I found that that Takeshi had disappeared again.
"Where'd he go?" I asked more to myself than to Nova.
"What are you talking about Yukiko?" Nova asked me in a confused tone as I stared blankly at where Takeshi stood.
"Oh never mind, well since it's the first day of spring vacation, do you want to go get some ice-cream?" I offered deciding I could use a little fun.
"You know it." Nova agreed eagerly as we began to follow the trail that lead out of the park. Unnaturally, Nova stayed a few steps behind me, not too far behind to make me worry, but far enough to catch my attention. Deciding it was nothing to be concerned about, I unwilling thought of Takeshi and how incredible he looked in red and black. What on earth were my hormones getting me into?
Only halfway out of the park I heard a pause Nova's footsteps and a hard drop only seconds later. By instinct, I turned around and found Nova down on her knees with a blue aura surrounding her, which appeared to be causing her great pain.
"Nova!" I yelled running to her side as she began grunting.
"My body... It feels like… needles…" Nova explained between grunts of pain. Tears began to stream down her face like a water fall as I kept her from falling forward onto the concrete. Her grunts turned into screams as soon as I did, as though just a touch of my arm was breaking her bones. She began to cough violently, blood seeping out of her mouth and nose.
I had enough at that point. Tossing her arm over my shoulder I surprisingly lifted her with ease and I began to run.
